Kuopio University Hospital

acquired AMiS smart clinical carestations to improve patient safety and work efficiency

Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) acquires 60 AMiS smart clinical carestation to improve patient safety and work efficiency – Prior to the use of AMiS, 20% of a nurse’s working time was spent walking between the patient room, the office and the medication room.

KUH will renew all inpatient operations by 2025. The design of the new hospital wards at Kuopio University Hospital focused in particular on improving efficiency. One new solution was the introduction of AMiS for nurses, which will significantly optimize their workflow. At the same time, walking between the patient’s room and the medication room will no longer be necessary.

Workflow Optimization

A study found that nurses walk an average of 3.7 km during their shift and spend 20% of their working time on the move. Most of this is between the patient room, the office and the medication room. We expect that the AMiS will reduce the amount of steps and increase the time spent close to the patient. A follow-up study will then show the final results, says Jouni Ahonen, a hospital pharmacist at KUH.

The main reason that KUH chose the AMiS is to integrate the closed loop medication solution : the route of the medication from the pharmacy to the patient is fully controlled and human error is minimized.

From planning to implementing

Now we need to start doing things differently in healthcare. New technologies will save time to make time for excellent patient care. Social welfare alone is not enough: the introduction of new ways of working and changes in legislation are also needed. Ahonen sees a challenge in the pharmaceutical care sector, since the legislation does not yet recognize automation as a means of ensuring patient safety. Legislation should be reformed to take full advantage of automation. This is a task for the ministries, and it is time for them to take action,” says Ahonen
