Working safer and more efficient
with AMiS-PRO at Reade

The decision to purchase new equipment is often made at the executive level. At Reade center for rehabilitation in Amsterdam, the Netherlands it was different. There it was nurse Marije van Capel who, together with other nurses, saw that the medication process could be a lot safer and more efficient. Together with her team, she arranged for new care stations.

From an old car to a Tesla
“We were still working the old school way, with an outdated medication trolley” Marije says. That was far from optimal and something really needed to be done. The smart care stations are quite a change. In that respect, it was as if we went from an old car to a Tesla. With the old trolleys, for example, all the medication drawers could be opened at the same time. Thanks to the new medication solution, that is no longer an issue. Only the specific patient’s drawer opens directly from the EPR. You also no longer need a notebook: comments or questions from the patient can now be entered directly on the computer screen. In addition, with the care stations, you can immediately conduct vital signs checks, report and sign off medication. You no longer have to do that separately: you do everything on one care station. It all just works together in a much more pleasant way.”

More efficient workflow
One of the most important advantages, Marije believes, is the connection with the EPR. “All actions are logged. That means, you can look up anything. And what’s also nice is that, no separate actions are needed to access the medicine drawers. You simply scan your nursing card and you are automatically authorised. That saves a great deal of hassle and is obviously safer.”

No manager was involved
The innovation project at Reade was entirely in the hands of nurses, which is very special. The orientation phase, the decision to opt for the new care stations and the implementation: all of this was done with no manager involvement. “It was very nice that we as nurses could choose for ourselves,” Marije says. “The decision really came from the team – everyone wanted the smart care stations. That also made implementation easier. The biggest advantage of the new situation? The fact that the medication process has become much safer. Compared to how we did it before, it’s so different!”
